Gandhinagar: A day after a delegation of American Congressmen and businessmen met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar on Thursday and invited the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader to visit the US, his political rivals on Saturday said the CM actually bribed the Americians to praise him.

Gujarat Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia said the visit was just a gimmick and PR exercise to promote Modi.

"It is a shame. Modi should resign," said Modhwadia, calling the visit as a funded trip. BJP, however, was quick to deny the allegation saying it was not their culture to fund visits.

Modhwadia said it was with money that an impression was created that the delegation was an official one so that Modi be granted visa by the US government that he has been long denied over the 2002 Gujarat riots and the role of Modi.

The 18-member US delegation, led by Republican Congressmen from Illinois Aaron Schock, held over an hour-long closed-door meeting with Modi and other top state officials.

Modi said he spoke to the delegation about the fast, inclusive and environment-friendly process of development in Gujarat.

Schock said he has invited Modi to visit the US.

Speaking to media, Schock said: "We are grateful to Chief Minister Narendra Modi. We learnt about the development. It is much easier to do business in Gujarat. Modi is a very dynamic person."

Another Republican lawmaker Cynthia Lummis said: "Workers are valued here, it is a desirable place to live in because of Shri Modi's leadership qualities."

The delegation is visiting India in order to promote 'People to People Contacts and Diplomacy' along with the Overseas Friends of BJP's (OFBJP) 'Global Community Overreach Programme'.
