The Congress has said there was no need to take action against President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee for his 'sexist' remarks against women protesting against Delhi rape incident as the party MP has 'realised' his mistake.

Speaking to reporters, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said: "He (Abhijit Mukherjee) has realised his mistake on his own. He has apologised for it. Where is the scope for taking action?"

Abhijit Mukherjee has dragged himself into a controversy over his ´sexist´ remarks where he purportedly said women protesting against the Delhi rape case in the national capital New Delhi were ´beautiful women who were highly dented and painted´.

The remarks immediately triggered a nationwide shock and outrage on Thursday with women, including Abhijit Mukherjee´s own sister Sharmistha Mukherjee, reacting sharply that saw the new Congress MP take back his words.

Abhijit Mukherjee retracted his comments and said: "I withdraw those words and apologize unconditionally."

He said he was quoted out of context and his intention was not to hurt anyone, but his remark was in reference to a specific question on some people who went to Delhi to protest while they kept silent when attacks on women took place in Kolkata and West Bengal.

Abhijit Mukherjee said he was ready to resign from his Lok Sabha seat if the party and people demanded it.

"Whatever they want I will do, being a law abiding citizen, loyal soldier of party, if party think I should resign I will do it," Abhijit Mukherjee told CNN-IBN.

He said his father should not be dragged into the matter.

"I have already replied, I apologised to my father for this controversy. Yes I am his son but because of me one shouldn´t drag his name," the Congress MP said.

Sparking a fresh controversy, Abhijit Mukherjee had told a vernacular channel: "These women who are protesting have no contact with ground reality...I know it well that what kind of character students should have. I can only see many beautiful women among them who are highly dented and painted. They are claiming to be students."

President´s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee said her brother´s comments were ´shocking´.
