Congress, CPI-M support Bhopal victims' dharna

Bhopal, Jan 13 (IBNS) Several leaders from Indian National Congress, and Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) on Friday extended their support to the demands of the five survivors' organizations who are sitting on indefinite dharna since January 3.

The organizations are demanding that the governments at the state and the centre revise the figures of deaths and injuries caused by the December '84 Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal in the curative petition pending before the Supreme Court.



They are also demanding that the state government withdraw the criminal charges on gas victims in connection with the incident of violence on the 27th anniversary of the disaster.

Addressing survivors at the dharna site, Manak Agggrawal spokesperson and Ishwar Singh Chouhan secretary of the State Congress Committee and President of the District Congress Committee P C Sharma said that their party will provide full support to the survivors' organizing in securing their demands of proper compensation for all gas victims and withdrawal of criminal cases against 2000 gas victims.

The Congress leaders said that they will organize a delegation of survivors' organizations led by President of the State Congress Committee to meet with the Prime Minister to discuss the issues raised by them.

Pushan Bhattacharya District Secretary of the Communist Party Marxist also extended his party's support to the demands of the organizations.

The organizations said that they were awaiting information on the decisions taken by the Group of Ministers on Bhopal (GoMB) which is meeting today on issues of compensation and disposal of hazardous waste left behind in the Union Carbide factory.

The organizations said they will decide on the next steps in their campaign on the basis of the stand taken by the Group of Ministers on Bhopal on the critical issue of additional compensation from Union Carbide and Dow Chemical.

The five organizations are Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmchari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pension Bhogi Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal Group for Information and Action and Children Against Dow Carbide.
