New Delhi: Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday said the Congress Party has gained several seats in Gujarat and contained the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Chidambaram said the Congress Party is the clear winner in both Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.
"Congress is the winner. Congress has won according to the last results I saw the Himachal election. And in Gujarat too, in my view, the Congress is the winner. Congress has gained several seats and BJP is being contained the last numbers that I saw below 117. If the BJP does not cross 117 and the Congress has improved its tally, the Congress is the clear winner in Gujarat too," he told mediapersons outside the Parliament here.
According to latest reports, the BJP is leading in 116 seats in Gujarat and the Congress alliance is ahead in 61 seats.
There are 182 assembly seats in Gujarat and a party needs at least 92 seats to get a majority and form the government.
The Congress is leading the BJP in Himachal Pradesh. The Congress is leading in 36 seats, while the BJP is ahead in 25 seats. The BJP won 41 seats, while the Congress emerged victorious in only 23 seats in the 2007 assembly polls. (ANI)
