The Congress Party and Left on Sunday criticised Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj for projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate after the 2014 general elections.

Swaraj had made the statement in Vadodara on Saturday.

Communist Party of India leader D Raja said: "I do not know many people are talking many things, even BJP, they talk about Modi and now there is some talk about Chidambaram. This is not how the prime minister is chosen in India. It is not a direct election. Whichever party emerges as the single largest party or whichever coalition emerges as the single largest, they have the prerogative to choose the head of the government. There are speculations, who can stop them from speculating such things? After all, we are a democracy, people keep talking."

Water Resources Minister Harish Rawat said: "Sushma Swaraj has taken Modi's name to save the Bharatiya Janata Party's sinking ship in Gujarat. She has not given this suggestion in a serious manner, we all know that Modi cannot be the prime minister of this country. A leader, who is not accepted by some sections in Gujarat and even in the country, how can he be the prime minister? The country wants to give responsibility to the youth in 2014."

Congress leader Jagdambika Pal, while speaking to a reporter in Basti, said: "Sushma Swaraj is herself a contender for the prime minister's post and her statement regarding Modi clearly reflects that BJP cannot form a government in Gujarat and what we can see is not the reality and what is concealed can be seen. The way BJP leaders are saying that the election is not for the Chief Minister's post, but for the prime minister's post. If Narendra Modi had really worked and developed the state, then why does he have to promote himself in a high-tech manner?"

BJP leader C P Thakur said in Patna: "She is a senior leader and a member of the core committee, so her statement that Narendra Modi is the best choice for the prime minister's post, we are with her and we feel the same."

The first phase of the Gujarat assembly polls will take place on December 13, while the second will be held on December 17. Counting of votes will take place on December 20. (ANI)
