Panaji, Apr 20 (IBNS) The Congress in Goa has decided to contest the Cortalim seat in the by polls to the Goa Assembly, which is left vacant due to the untimely death of sitting MLA and Minister Mathany Saldanha.
The party is though yet decided whom to field from the constituency.
Saldanha, Minister for Tourism and Forest succumbed to a massive heart attack on March 21. His wife, Alina, a teacher by profession is most likely to contest from the seat.
Addressing a press conference after meeting with office bearers, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Subhash Shirodkar said they will not repeat mistakes committed in the recently concluded general assembly elections.
The meeting was held today evening at the party headquarters in the capital discussed the results of the assembly elections and to chalk out strategies for the forthcoming panchayat elections on May 16.
Shirodkar said that Medium of Instruction, Family Raj, illegal mining and infighting for tickets, led to their debacle.
"In few constituencies during the assembly polls, many congressmen were not happy with the ticket allocation. For the panchayat election, we will not commit the same mistake. We will support our party workers contesting the election," he said.
Congress' sweeping defeat in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa is being reviewed by Union Defense Minister A K Anthony.
