Modi reaches out to youth, pitches for development

Basti: With the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) geared up to set the Hindutva code for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, Congress leader Jagdambika Pal on Thursday lashed out at the main opposition party for converting this religious fair into a political one.

Pal said the Kumbh Mela is a fair of faith and belief for crores of people.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party earlier used Ayodhya for their political gains. In the same manner today, Rajnath Singh has been there and all preparations are being made for Narendra Modi; the Bharatiya Janata Party does not want this Kumbh Mela to remain a religious fair and are converting it into a political one," he added.

Pal also raised objections to the presence of almost all the BJP leaders, including the expected arrival of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, in the 2013 Maha Kumbh Mela.

" Why didn't Narendra Modi go to Kumbh prior to this? Narendra Modi has never been to Ayodhya," he said.

The Congress leader also lashed out at BJP President Rajnath Singh over his remarks that the main opposition party is committed to the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.

Top leaders of the RSS, BJP and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) are attending the 'Dharma Sansad' in the Kumbh Mela today.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has also already reached there and Modi is expected to arrive on February 12.

Modi's visit comes at a time when the chorus within the BJP for declaring him party's prime ministerial candidate has grown loud, making NDA members like the Janata Dal-United (JD -U) nervous and resulting in a gag order on the issue by BJP President.

Speculations have been rife that Modi, who secured an electoral hat-trick in Gujarat in December last year, may spearhead the BJP's campaign in 2014 polls.

BJP leaders Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani have earlier openly endorsed Modi's name as prime ministerial candidate. The other BJP leaders have been so far evasive on this issue. (ANI)
