Taking on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over its move to bring a no-confidence motion against the UPA Government, the Congress Party on Thursday described it a joke on democracy.

Reacting to the TMC move, Congress leader and Union Urban Development Minister Deepa Dasmunshi said: They have democratic right to do so but they should know what number they are having. It's a joke on democracy, because Without 50 numbers how can they do like this."

"It already has been washed out, what you have seen. They have their right to agitate and protest, what they are doing," she said.

Asked about the government strategy on the opposition uproar for discussion under Rule 184, which entails a vote on the issue of the government decision t allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail sector, Dasmunshi said: "The government and the speaker will decide whether the discussion under Rule 184 will tae place or not, but we are ready to face any kind o challenge because reforms are required."

Earlier today, TMC president Mamata Banerjee handed over the no-confidence motion to Lok Sabha Speaker on the first day of the winter session, but the motion failed to get support form the minimum required number of the members, which is 54.

Only 19 TMC's MPs and three MPs from Biju Janata Dal supported the no-confidence motion and got rejected by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. (ANI)
