Shillong, Feb 5 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Manda Sangma Tuesday exuded confidence that the state's people will give a clear mandate to the Congress in the Feb 23 assembly elections.

"We are getting a good response from the people. As we come closer to the polling day, I am sure there will be a swing in favour of the Congress," Sangma told IANS after filing his nomination paper.

The chief minister and his wife Dikanchi D. Shira filed their nominations for the Ampati and Mahendraganj seats in Garo Hills respectively.

Sangma's wife is making her political debut and would be largely riding on her husband's popularity in a bid to win.

Former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Sangma's sons Conrad and James also filed their nomination from Selsella and Raksamgre constituencies respectively on their National People's Party (NPP) ticket.

The NPP, which is making its debut in the state elections, also has expressed confidence that it would do well during the elections.

Conrad Sangma said his party would focus on its manifesto released recently.

"Unemployment, corruption, illegal immigration and the inter-state border problem are some of the issues the party would be focusing on. We would be seriously trying to address these issues," he added.
