Kolkata: Trinamool Congress councillor Mohmmad Iqbal, who is accused as one of the aides in connection to a violence in Kolkata's Garden Reach area where a police sub-inspector was killed, will be produced in a Kolkata court on Friday, a day after his arrest from Bihar.

On Feb 12, sub-inspector Tapas Choudhury was killed while four other students were injured as clashes between supporters of Chhatra Parishad (CP) and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) broke out when leaders from both the sides were filing nomination papers for a students’ union election.

The police had earlier arrested 12 people, including prime accused Sheikh Shubhaan, in connection with the murder of the sub-inspector.

"Iqbal has been arrested from Dehri-on-Son," Shibaji Ghosh, Additional Director General, CID said on Thursday.

Iqbal will be produced before a Kolkata court where the CID will seek his transit remand, said reports.

Iqbal has been reportedly charged with rioting, attempt to murder and violations of certain sections of the Arms Act by police.

In video footage of the clashes on Feb 12, Iqbal was reportedly spotted standing next to prime accused Sheikh Shubhaan, when the latter allegedly fired the bullet which killed the policeman, Tapas Chowdhury.

The Opposition had earlier alleged that the prime accused Shubhaan is close to Iqbal. TV footage by local channels claimed Iqbal also attempted to slap a cop.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also removed Kolkata Police Commissioner RK Pachnanda from his post though the move landed the chief minister in further controversy.
