Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians by 38 runs in the elimination match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday.
Chasing 188 for victory, Mumbai Indians managed to score149 runs for the loss of nine wickets.
D Smith (38) and Sachin Tendulkar (11) gave Mumbai Indians a handsome start before Tendulkar got run out in the fifth over of the innings.
Smith hit five boundaries and two sixes in his 22-ball innings before he was dismissed by Jakati.
R Sharma (14), D Karthik (6), J Franklin (13), K Pollard (16) failed with their bats on Wednesday.
D Bravo and A Morkel picked up two wickets each for CSK while S Jakati, B Hilfenhaus, R Ashwin R Jadeja scalped one wicket each in the match.
Earlier, CSK scored 187 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs.
MS Dhoni´s team had a poor start as they lost the M Vijay (1) and SK Raina (0) in the early stage of the innings.
M Hussey (49) and S Badrinath (47) steadied the innings that was tumbling by losing two quick wickets.
MS Dhoni played a brilliant knock of 51 runs from 20 deliveries and remained not out till the end. He hit six boundaries and two sixes in the innings.
D Bravo hit three boundaries and two sixes in his crucial knock of 33 runs from 14 deliveries in the match. He remained not out till the end along with Dhoni.
Both added 73 runs in the sixth wicket partnership.
D Kulkarni picked up three wickets by giving away 46 runs in his four overs for Mumbai.
CSK will now face Delhi Daredevils in the second qualifier match of the tournament. The winner of the match will face Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.
