Culling continues in Malda

Malda: An estimated 15,000 chickens in state-run poultry firms were exterminated by Animal Husbandry Development (AHD) officials in Englishbazar Municipal area of Malda district as culling operation on Friday continued in the district, hit by the bird flu for the second time.

Full coverage: Bird flu hits West Bengal Thirty AHD teams, each having six members, were involved in the operation, which mostly took place in the market areas and the neighbourhood of Englishbazar, additional district magistrate Purnachandra Shit said.

He said while 15,000 fowls were killed in state-run firms, the administration has set up the culling target at 44,000 with the drive, which commenced on Thursday, slated to continue for two more days.

Although culling was underway within three-km radius of the affected areas, surveillance was on a ten-km stretch.
