Guwahati/Goalpara: The indefinite curfew in Krishnai and Mornoi areas of trouble-torn Goalpara district was relaxed today with no fresh incidents reported from the district where counting of panchayat election votes was on.

Curfew was relaxed from 6 AM to 8 PM today even as the Army deployed since the panchayat poll day on February 12 was carrying out flag marches in the sensitive areas of the district, sources said.

The situation in the district, which is the nerve centre of the Rabha Hasong Joint Action Committee opposed to panchayat polls, had turned violent on poll day with 20 people killed in police firing, arson and clashes.

The ban on movement of people by river and other water-bodies in the district, however, continued between 3 PM and 7 AM to prevent movement of trouble-makers, they said.

Though counting of votes of the three-phase panchayat elections began yesterday across the state, the counting in Goalpara district postponed to today was taken up peacefully this morning in six zilla parishads, they said.

A 12-hour Assam bandh was called yesterday by the Joint Action Committee, supported by the Rabha-Hasong Students Union, to protest the alleged killing of people of the Rabha and Hasong ethnic communities in police firing and clashes in the district during the panchayat polls.

The RHJAC has been demanding holding of the RHAC polls ahead of the panchayat hustings as the village and panchayat committees would undermine the authority of the Autonomous Council.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the state government would recommend a CBI enquiry into the incidents.
