CWG scam: Kalmadi, 10 others charged

New Delhi, Dec 21 (IBNS) Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CWGOC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi and 10 others on Friday were charged by a Delhi court with corruption, theft and conspiracy in a graft case linked to 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Besides Kalmadi, the others who were charged are newly elected organising committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot, organising committee director deneral V.K. Verma, director general (procurement) Surjit Lal, Joint Director General (sports) A.S.V. Prasad and treasurer M Jayachandran.



Except Bhanot, other who have been charged are not associated with the sports any more. Bhanot has recently been elected as the secretray general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Judge Talwant Singh of the Patiala House court is expected to pass orders on charges.

They accused have been been chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly "illegally" awarding a contract to install Timing, Scoring and Results (TSR) system for the 2010 CWG to Swiss Timing. The contract allegedly caused a loss of over Rs. 90 crore to the state exchequer.

The CBI in its chargesheet alleged that Kalmadi and Co. rejected Spanish firm MSL´s much lower bid of Rs. 62 crore and awarded the contract to Swiss Timing Omega.

The prosecutor also argued that two bids were received for TSR contract from Swiss Timing and MSL Spain and the same were opened on November 4, 2009 but Kalmadi and Verma had on already announced in a meeting on October 12, 2009 that the contract would be awarded to Swiss Timing.
