Dharmashala (Himachal), May 19 (IBNS): David Warner slammed a 44-ball 79 as Delhi Daredevils knocked out Kings XI Punjab from the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a six-wicket win in their last league match at the HPCA Stadium here Saturday.
It was an all-round performance by Daredevils, who were the first team to make the play-offs, as their pacers led by Morne Morkel (4-20) restricted Kings XI to 141 for eight in 20 overs.
Warner then struck a quick-fire 79, hitting 10 fours and four sixes, as Daredevils made 145 for four with 10 balls to spare.
Dropped on 46, Warner made the most of the opportunity and ensured Daredevils marched into the play-off stage on a winning note.
Daredevils´ win has also ensured Mumbai´s entry into the knockout stage. Even if Mumbai lose Sunday´s match against Rajasthan Royals they will still end with 18 points, enough to get the fourth position in the table.
Chasing a modest target of 142 to win, Daredevils went on the offensive right from the start. Youngster Unmukt Chand (18) and Warner set the stage with their 82-run stand for the first wicket. Warner completely dominated the partnership.
Venugopal Rao remained unbeaten on 21 to take Daredevils home safely.
Daredevils´ win has also revived defending champions Chennai Super Kings´ hopes of making into the next stage. Even if Royal Challengers lose Sunday, they will be tied on 17 points with Chennai. But Super Kings will go through on the basis of better net run-rate.
