Delhi gang-rape case moved to fast-track court; accused wants trial shifted out of Delhi

A month after a 23-year-old medical student was gangraped and assaulted in a Delhi bus, the case was transferred to a fast-track court in the national capital on Thursday.

A Metropolitan Magistrate court in New Delhi committed the case to a fast-track court and the hearing of it will start from Jan 21.

Pertinently, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Altamas Kabir on Jan 2 inaugurated the fast-track court at Saket in New Delhi that will deal with the gangrape and murder case of the medical student.

Meanwhile, one of the accused Ram Singh, who was the driver of the bus, is planning to move the Supreme Court to transfer the trial of the case outside the national capital to any other state except Uttar Pradesh, reports said.

His lawyer VK Anand said he believed Singh would not get proper trial in Delhi and alleged that the police was biased against him.

Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur are the other accused in the case.

The case of the sixth accused, who is reportedly a minor, is being heard by a Juvenile Justice Board here.

On Dec 16, the six gangraped and brutalised the 23-year-old girl with an iron rod on a moving bus. The victim succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital on Dec 29.

The incident triggered nationwide outrage against rising cases of rape and brutalization of women in India with people pouring into the streets of New Delhi for days and demanding a change of law and strict punishment of the accused.
