Scores of people, mostly youth and students, are staging a peaceful protest and are taking part in a silent march starting from Munirka towards Jantar Mantar to mourn the death of the 23-year-old gang rape victim, who died early this morning at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital after battling for life since December 16.

After hearing that sad news, people started gathering at Jantar Mantar, despite tight security arrangements by the Delhi Police.

Hundreds of students under the banner of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) marched silently from the university campus and sat on a peaceful protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Kumar Vishwas also joined the protest along with their supporters with their mouth tied with black cloth.

While mourning the death of the victim and demanding stringent punishment for the culprits, the protestors also showed their anger against the security lock down around the India Gate and Raisina Hills areas.

"The government is not even allowing mourning of the death. You have the metro stations shut. You have a road completely blocked. This is undemocratic," said a protester.

Security has been stepped up in and around New Delhi and Section 144 has been clamped in and around the national capital. At least 28 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed. Ten metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Mandi House, Pragati Maidan, Barakhamba and even Khan Market, have been closed to restrict movement of protesters towards the main protest areas.
