Singapore: Indian High Commissioner T.C.A. Raghavan today said that the body of the Delhi gang-rape victim and her family members will depart Singapore in the afternoon.

The Delhi gang-rape victim, whose assault in the national capital triggered nationwide protests, died in a Singapore hospital on Saturday of injuries suffered to her brain from the cardiac arrest she suffered at the Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday night.

Raghavan said after her death that the family had expressed a desire for her body to be flown back to India.

He said: "The requisite formalities for sending the body to India have been completed. The deceased and the family members will be flown back to India in a chartered aircraft later this afternoon.

"I can tell you that the family have yet to decide on what they are going to do in terms of the next steps. You must understand that they have suffered a great trauma and it has been a very trying and difficult time for them and since we do have the advantage of a few hours, we are letting them make up their minds without any urgency being added to it."

The Singapore hospital said earlier that the woman had suffered "significant brain injury" and was surviving against the odds. She had already undergone three abdominal operations before being flown to Singapore.

The Delhi Police has urged people to maintain calm in wake of death of the gang-rape victim in a Singapore Hospital, announcing that India Gate, Raisina Hill and its surrounding areas that comprise the national capital's power centre would be closed for the general public.

The police ramped up security to prevent any potential flare up of violence or protests as the gang rape victim died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital.
