New Delhi: As the nation boiled with rage over the gang rape of a 23-year-old girl last week, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde condoned the police action on the protesters by saying that 'hooligans and goondas’ had entered the crowd, and also compared the agitating crowd at India Gate to Maoists.
During an interview with CNN-IBN, Shinde defended the police crackdown by saying, "Hooligans and goondas had joined the protesters and were damaging public property and pelting stones, following this police took action.”
Shinde also appears to think that if the government allows students to demonstrate at India Gate, tomorrow Maoists can come and protest too.
When Shinde was asked why the government was not talking to the protesters, he retorted, "If we meet students today, tomorrow we may have to meet Maoists."
He went on to say that the police action was forced because the protesting crowd had begun moving towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan, and if they had not been stopped then the government would have had to face a volley of criticism for not protecting the 'image of the nation.'
However, he added that a probe has been ordered into the violence at India Gate, and that he wouldn't spare anyone.
The Minister out right rejected the demand for a Special Session of Parliament saying that he has given one month time and will ensure action within the time frame.
On the growing anger over the huge security being provided to VIPs and the common man feeling unsafe on Delhi roads, the Home Minister said that he will look into the issue.
Here are some reactions from Twitter on the Home Minister's comments.
@sardesairajdeep: Pm has 3 daughters, so does shinde, so does rpn singh. If you guys aren't gender sensitive, who will be? Action, not words
@sagarikaghose: Shinde to CNNIBN: when Soniaji herself had met protestors, they shd have been happy. Sir, Soniaji is a politician, not our monarch
@neerajsaxena: Does one need more proof of this govt's sensitivity towards people? Shinde Says:Tomorrow 100 Adivasis will be killed. Can the govt go there?
