As India mourned the death of the Delhi gangrape victim in a Singapore hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday demanded strict action against the accused in the case.

Mamata´s All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) quoting the Chief Minister tweeted: "West Bengal CM requests people to be more vigilant so that nobody dares to commit such heinous crimes."

"West Bengal CM asks for stringent punishment for those involved in barbaric and heinous crime like rape," AITMC said.

"Bengal CM will inaugurate new tourist attraction of Kolkata 400 acres Eco Tourism Park. However cultural prog cncld (cancelled) as a mark of respect," it said.

Pertinently, Mamata earlier this year dragged a lot of criticisms for her handling of the infamous Park Street rape case in West Bengal.

The 37-year-old mother of two, belonging to the Anglo-Indian community, had said that she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint inside a moving car after she was given a lift in the vehicle from Park Street area in Kolkata on the Feb 5-6 night this year.

However, Mamata had said that a billowing controversy over the rape and alleged police insensitivity to the incident was a conspiracy fabricated to malign her government.

Party MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Friday triggered a fresh controversy when she said the infamous Park Street rape case in West Bengal was not a ´rape case´ but a ´misunderstanding between the lady and her client´, doubting the victim´s character.

"If you´re referring to the Park Street rape, see that is a different case altogether that was not at all a rape case. It was a misunderstanding between the two parties involved between a lady and her client. This was not a rape," Dastidar told CNN-IBN.
