Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday was not allowed at Jantar Mantar when she tried to reach out to protesters, gathered there to show their solidarity to the 23-year-old gangrape victim who died at a Singapore hospital early morning.

Dikshit went to Jantar Mantar to pay her tribute to the girl, whose fighting spirit and the nationwide concern for her recovery made her the daughter of India.

But as soon as she reached there protesters started shouting anti-Delhi government slogans like ´Go back Sheila Dikshit´ and ´Go back CM´.

According to reports, she was even heckled by the people and was forced to leave the protest site.

Hundreds gathered at the Jantar Mantar at around 10 am and observed a ´silent sit-in´.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Kumar Vishwas, along with their supporters, also joined the mourning with their mouth tied with black cloth.

Earlier Dikshit had appealed to Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to allow ´peaceful´ demonstration at the India Gate. But her appeal was turned down by the Centre showing crowd management issues.

Meanwhile, Dikshit appealed for calm while saying her heart is burning.

"Our heart goes to the family. My heart is burning over the incident. The passing away of the girl is a truly and terribly tragic incident. It shook our conscience," she said.

The 23-year-old medical student who was raped and brutalised by six men on a moving bus in Delhi on Dec 16, was shifted to Singapore´s Mount Elizabeth Hospital because it specializes in multi-organ transplant procedures.

She died in the hospital Saturday morning (Indian time 2-15 am), finally losing a 13-day-long fight with destiny, but leaving the nation in a state of mourning and churning as the collective anger of people found new expressions in clamour for change and justice.
