Delhi school rape: principal suspended

The principal and four other employess of a Delhi municipal corporation run school were suspended after a seven-year-old was raped inside the school premises on Thursday last, reports said.

The school rape at Mangolpuri in New Delhi triggered angry street violence.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Saturday reacted to the rape and said he has directed the police to take firm steps on the issue.

"I have given instructions to the police. I spoke yesterday in Parliament on the Maharashtra case," Shinde told reporters here.



"We have taken these matters very seriously. The government is taking firm steps," he said.

Meanwhile, the police on Saturday dismissed the role of an outsider in the case.

The victim has been discharged from a Delhi hospital where she was undergoing treatment.

Dr Puneeta Mahajan, Medical Superintendent, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital was quoted as saying by CNN-IBN, "The patient was discharged in a stable condition yesterday at 4 pm. Prima facie medical tests confirmed sexual assault. We are awaiting final reports."

Security has been beefed up in Mangolpuri area of the city following violent protest outside the hospital on Friday where the victim was treated. Rapid Action Force teams have been deployed in the area on Saturday, reports said.

Protesting against the incident, around 500 people demonstrated outside the hospital. The angry mob damaged vehicles and pelted stones on the police, reports said.

The police on the other hand resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesters.

The police have detained 10 people, including a security guard and two male teachers of the school where the incident took place, for questioning.

No arrests have been made so far.

Shocking the nation, a minor was raped inside the government-run school in the national capital on Thursday.

Media reports said the Class II girl was left badly injured. She was later hospitalized by her parents.

The school is one run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
