Khargone (Madhya Pradesh): If men, especially politicians, haven't already stoked enough controversy with their insensitive remarks pertaining to the issue of rape and rape victims, a woman scientist on Thursday made a shocking statement to compete with them.
Dr. Anita Shukla, an agricultural scientist and Secretary of Lions Club, laid blame on the Delhi rape victim for not "surrendering herself to the rapists". She said that surrender was the best option in such a situation.
"The victim should have surrendered when surrounded by six men, at least it could have saved her intestines," she was quoted as saying by Daily Bhaskar.
The irony of Shukla's remarks is that her statement was made in a seminar addressing the subject of "Sensitivity towards women" in Khargone, MP.
"Women instigate men to commit such crimes", she added. Echoing a popular patriarchal view, she asked why the victim was out of her house after 10 pm and suggested that any girl wandering late at night with her "boyfriend" is liable to find herself in such a situation.
The police officials at the seminar were muted when Shukla made these comments.
She went on to defend the actions of the police by suggesting that it is not possible to give protection to every citizen at all times.
