Paula Broadwell, who had an extramarital affair with CIA Chief David Petraeus that ensnared his career, has told her friends that she is devastated by the fallout.

A friend, who does not want to be identified, said that Broadwell deeply regrets the damage that's been done to her family and everyone else involved.

The friend said that she is trying to repair that and move forward.

A group of friends and neighbours have welcomed Broadwell, her husband, Scott, and their young sons back to their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, after they spent more than a week at her brother's home in Washington.

According to the Herald Sun, Broadwell is being investigated by the FBI over classified documents found on her laptop and in her home.

Investigators believe the author gathered the documents while researching for her biography on Petraeus in Afghanistan.

According to the report, the FBI stumbled onto their relationship after tracking anonymous emails Broadwell allegedly sent to Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, warning her to stay away from Petraeus and Afghanistan war commander General John Allen.

Kelley served as sort of an unpaid social liaison for military leaders, hosting parties at her and her husband's home, where senior officers would mingle with Tampa's elite, the report added. (ANI)
