DMK president M Karunanidhi turned 90 on June 3, 2013.
The never-say-die Dravidian patriarch last swept Tamil Nadu in 2006, becoming the CM for the fifth time.
In 2011 he exchanged the CM seat with his rival - AIADMK's supremo Jayalalithaa after his party lost by a landslide. But this game of musical chairs has been played many times in Karunanidhi's six-decade long political career.
Since his latest defeat he has been in the news constantly - although mostly for the involvement of his party members - A Raja and his daughter Kanimozhi - in the 2G scam.
The perception that his party was at the forefront of corruption in the Centre has given his image a battering. His daughter, along with A Raja, was also jailed for months in connection with the 2G scam - keeping things rocky even on the personal front.
The bitter infighting over the succession between his sons - M K Stalin and M K Alagiri - has also soured relations within the DMK in 2013, with Karunanidhi appearing unable to control the cadre.
While some of his birthdays, especially when he was in power, were celebrated with great pomp - off late the celebrations have been muted due to recent events.
