The stadium in question is the yet-to-be-built Al-Wakrah sports stadium, meant for the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar.
The company that designed it, AECOM Technology Corporation, claimed that the design was based on a traditional pearl diving boat called a Dhow.
To help people visualize the project, the company released a video, in which, for the first time, the fancy design was unveiled to the public, perhaps hoping to generate some early excitement.
However, the only reaction they seem to have generated so far has been a roaring debate (especially on sites like Buzzfeed and Reddit) on how little the stadium looks like a boat and how very much it looks like a giant model of female genitalia.
Some disagree, but most find the comparison, or similarities, too obvious to ignore. The low level animation and odd panning shots used in the video only seem to aid in the visual comparison.
We will still have to wait many years to see what the stadium will actually look like once it is built.
But for now, the giggles show no sign of abating. (after all, nicknames tend to stick practically forever.)
