London: A plane carrying Brit tourists had to make an emergency diversion after a drunken passenger tried to open the door, while the aircraft was flying about 35,000 feet over the Atlantic.

Dean Lyons, 30, was allegedly abusive to other passengers and cabin crew on the flight from Gatwick to Cuba.

As cabin crew tried to calm Lyons down, passengers claimed, he grabbed at a door.

It was at that point that the captain announced that they would have to divert to the nearest airport, said the passengers.

Police boarded the First Choice Boeing 767-300 after it was diverted and landed at Bermuda airport, and led Lyons away.

Bermudan police said that Lyons had not been charged, but was detained "under security watch" at a hotel, and that he could face charges in the UK.

Passenger Dominic Carman, who was taking his wife and three children on holiday to Cuba, said that Lyons appeared to have been drinking before the flight took off.

"He was in a group of about seven or eight people and sitting about three seats away from me," the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

"He first became very abusive to another passenger and they almost came to blows. The captain made an announcement that people who were drinking duty free they had brought with them should not drink any more, but the man continued to be abusive," he added.
