Republican Senator for Florida, Marco Rubio, who accused President Barack Obama of 'smothering' the US middle class with 'big government' during State of the Union speech, appeared distracted undermined by a distracting physical appearance during his address.
In the official Republican response to Obama's address, the 41-year-old Rubio perspired under the hot television lights and repeatedly wiped his dry mouth.
Rubio was eventually forced to reach out of the camera shot to grab a small bottle of Poland Spring mineral water in order to ease his thirst.
According to the Telegraph, social media was soon abuzz with commentators' claims that Rubio may have been suffering from nerves, or had at least been poorly prepared.
Garrett Jackson, an assistant to Mitt Romney during last year's election campaign, on Twitter said that ' he would have had that water bottle closer', adding that 'Marco needs an aide'.
In an attempt to defuse the situation with humour, Rubio promptly tweeted a photograph of his water bottle on his own Twitter account.
According to the report, Rubio has hailed America as the exception to the rule seen through 'much of human history' - that 'most people were trapped in stagnant societies, where a tiny minority always stayed on top, and no one else even had a chance'.
Blaming government interference in the housing market for the devastating economic downturn of recent years, and repeatedly claiming that 'more government' would only hinder its recovery, Rubio argued for a sharp reduction in public spending and deregulation for small businesses, the report added.
