The Election Commission (EC) is expected to issue a notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopinath Munde, in connection with his comment on spending Rs. 8 crore in the last Lok Sabha elections, reports said on Saturday.
The Commission will ask Munde to explain why he spent Rs. 8 crore when the prescribed limit is Rs. 25 lakh.
According to reports, Munde will be given a week´s time to reply to the notice.
In his speech on Thursday in Mumbai, Munde said he had spent Rs. 29,000 when he contested his first Assembly poll in 1980. He said he had spent Rs. 8 crore for 2009 Lok Sabha election.
The Congress-led government had demanded that the Commission should take cognizance of the BJP leader´s remarks.
"If Mr Munde has gone over the Rs. 25 lakh limit, it is for him to explain to the Election Commission, and the Commission to take cognizance of it. If Mr Munde has said he has spent Rs. 7 to 8 crores, it would be proper the Election Commission asks him. It is in the nation´s interest, and the responsibility of the commission," Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said on Friday.
