Mumbai: The Editors Guild of India Sunday condemned the violence against journalists here during a Muslim protest and urged police to deal with the attackers "sternly".
The Guilt said in a statement that it "condemns in the strongest words a deliberate and caclulated attack on the media by protesters in Mumbai Saturday".
It urged the Maharashtra government to order a thorough probe into the incident and demanded that those responsible for the mayhmen be dealt with sternly.
Two people were killed, including one in police firing, when thousands took to the streets to condemn attacks on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.
"Burning of three media OB vans and attacks on the reporters and photographers of The Hindu, Sakaal Times and number of others and smashing their equipment to destroy evidence, shows a design to teach a lesson to those who had reached Azad Maidan to do their duty," the Guild said.
"It is matter of grave concern that the mob even threatened to set photographer with the daily Sakaal Times on fire," said Vijay Naik, the Guild's general secretary.
