Edwards treasurer never saw 2011 campaign reports

The treasurer for John Edwards' presidential bid says the campaign has been electronically signing his name to federal spending reports without his knowledge.

Julius L. Chambers is listed as approving the disclosure reports, which showed more than $800,000 in spending in 2011 even though Edwards' political career imploded four years ago when he admitted fathering a child with his mistress.

Campaign finance experts, including a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, says there is nothing in the law that addresses whether Edwards' staff can use the treasurer's name as affirming documents he has never seen. They say the situation shows federal elections regulations have not yet caught up with electronic filing.

Edwards's lawyer said the campaign has the authority to use Chambers' name.

An FEC spokeswoman declined to comment.
