Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said efforts to promote the tourism sector have been fruitful, as more and more people have been visiting to explore the state.

"In the last few years, we have made efforts to promote tourism sector and people from across the world visit Gujarat and explore the state. I can proudly say that in such a small period of time, no other country or state can attract so much tourism like Gujarat has done," he said, while addressing a gathering during the annual kite-flying festival here.

Modi also praised the tourism growth rate of Gujarat, which he said has been 16 percent.

"The tourism growth of India is seven percent and the tourism growth of Gujarat is 16 percent," he said proudly.

Kite-flying enthusiasts from all over the world got ready to compete as silver jubilee edition of International Kite Festival came to an end here today.

The annual kite-flying festival, which marks the start of spring, involved aerial duels in which participants tried to bring down each other's kites using string coated in a sticky paste of ground-up glass or metal.

The festival coincides with Uttarayan, the country's largest kite festival, during which the entire city takes to the rooftops.

This festival has become a favourite destination for hundreds of kite fliers from across the world to display their colourful and different shaped and sized kites as well as the skills of flying them.

Cultural shows and dance performances by children were also part of the show. Hundreds of children also performed a yogic exercise called Surya Namaskar.

The popular festival spelled magic for the tourism industry in the state, as many visitors from abroad as well as from India gathered at the place.
