There is no difference between a male artist and a female artist, says famous painter Asma Menon. 'An artist is an artist' and the difference is only in the subject matter, observes the Chennai-based artist who has exhibited her works in different parts of the world.
In an exclusive interview to Salil Jose on the occasion of World Women's Day, the award winning painter says society or family can't be a challenge for a woman who wants to be a full-time painter. All what they need to do is to just embrace their passion and adhere to it.
Excerpts
Which genre of painting or ism you follow?
Today there is no genre or ism to follow. After the ism and post modern period in art, artists follow a path that speaks a language of their creative expression.
I create works of art that can be called my own.
Can you name some of the artists who have influenced your style?
Many artists have influenced the artist in me. By artists I don't just mean painters. I have been influenced by performance and theatre artistes, hoarding painters and the artists on the streets as well.
