Washington: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined a search for an 18-year-old Indian-origin student in the United States who mysteriously disappeared over the weekend.

Harsha Maddula was last seen early on Saturday after a night of partying at the school in Illinois with a group of friends.

Harsha's parents, twin younger brothers and other relatives were looking for him as divers searched Lake Michigan where his cell-phone was last active, the New York Post reports.

As search efforts intensify, Maddula's father said his hopes are slowly fading about the boy being found.

Harsha, who has diabetes that can leave him disoriented if he doesn't take his medication, went out on Friday night with friends to two off-campus parties, police officials said.

On Saturday, some of his friends left the second party and headed on foot to a third about a quarter-mile away.

When they arrived there, they realized that Harsha, who showed no signs of being drunk, was gone, his family said.
