Kolkata, July 7 (IBNS) A big fire broke out in the highly congested Burrabazar area of north central Kolkata on Saturday night, officials said.
Several fire engines reached the spot but the fire brigade had a tough time battling the flames which was fast spreading.
The fire started in a four-storeyed house at around 9 pm. While the exact cause of the fire was not known, it could be form an air conditioner, initial reports said.
At least 20 fire engines were at the spot while the local traders were seen running helter-skelter and trying to save their materials.
The disaster management group had also reached the scene, known for its narrow alleys and choc-a-bloc pavements.
The firemen tried to break walls of the house and douse the flames.
Burrabazar is the commercial nucleus of Kolkata and one of the largest wholesale markets in India.
There are all kinds of shops and godowns in the area ranging from garments to spices and hardware to food items.
