Bangalore: An explosion near the Karnataka BJP office in a crowded residential area here today left five persons injured, two of them seriously.
Three cars and another vehicle were damaged in the explosion, the exact nature of which was not immediately known, police and fire brigade officials said.
Bangalore Police Commissioner, Raghvendra Auradkar, said that the explosion was caused by a bomb. “We feel that it is a motorcycle blast. It seems to be a bomb explosion,” he said.
He said that 13 people including 8 policemen were injured in the blast, adding that two among them are critically injured.
Five persons were injured and have been shifted to hospital, police said.
Reacting to the reports, BJP leader Balbir Punj said, “One only hopes that it is an accident and not an act by terrorists or political activists.”
Initial reports said the explosion could have been caused by a cylinder fitted to a car.
Police have cordoned off the area around the BJP office.
With the state going to Assembly polls on May five, the BJP office is crowded with party workers and others. Today is the last day for filing of nominations.
Though it’s not yet known if there’s any terror angle, the NIA team has reached the spot and are investigating the site.
Meanwhile, the forensic team and a bomb squad are also investigating the area, said police.
