British security bosses have claimed that foreign states tried to penetrate the country's network of vital utilities to plot a cyber attack.

The security officials revealed that potential enemies attempted for the first time to "map" transport links, electricity and water supply.

"There is concern about a determined attack against the critical national infrastructure," the Sun quoted a senior government official, as saying.

According to the report, Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude is publishing an update of the Government's year-old cyber security strategy.

"The Internet transforms the risk we face. It is why we have rated attacks from cyberspace one of the top four threats to our national security," Maude said.

According to the report, the latest warning follows a similar one issued in the US recently by FBI cyber defence chiefs.

The UK government has launched a drive to alert the public to the soaring threat of online attacks, the report added. (ANI)
