Former Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain dubs Boeing Dreamliner a 'Chinese Toy'

Dubbing the grounded Boeing Dreamliner aircrafts as cheap 'Chinese Toys', former aviation minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain on Thursday said the government must pressurize the American company to provide other aircrafts of the same category.

Earlier in the day, the DGCA grounded all six Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft operated by Air India after the same decision was made by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following repeated technical snags.

Speaking to reporters here, Hussain said the quality of the aircraft was not up to the mark.

"The Dreamliner is just like a Chinese toy. I have travelled by it several times. I have spoken to the crew members, who say that even the interior of the plane is like Chinese sofas, breaking into pieces," said Hussain.

"The whole world, including the United States, has grounded the aircraft. India must now pressurize Boeing to provide another aircraft of the same category, and if the aircraft has technical snags, then why did the government decide to buy it," he added.

Meanwhile, another BJP leader Balbir Punj has demanded a high-level inquiry in the matter.

"The Dreamliner deal was highly suspicious and the very fact that plane has not been upto expectations, and has had to be grounded, calls for an immediate inquiry at the highest level to fix responsibility, as to how the country has been burdened by the dead machines and how much losses India and Air India as a whole have suffered," said Punj.

India joined Japan, Europe and the United States in grounding Boeing 787 aircrafts; a day after a second incident involving battery failure caused one of the Dreamliner passenger jets to make an emergency landing in Japan.

It is the first such action against a U.S.-made passenger plane since the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 was grounded in 1979 after a deadly crash in Chicago, analysts said. (ANI)
