Four killed in police encounter

Lucknow: Four gangsters who had committed many crimes in Uttar Pradesh were killed in a shootout with the police though two managed to escape on Thursday evening, the police said.

"The four were involved in cases of loot, dacoity, contract killing and highway robbery," Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal said.

They were killed in a cross-firing with the police at Sidhari locality in Azamgarh district, some 300 km from Lucknow, he added.

Two 9-mm carbines, a 9-mm pistol, a 12-bore rifle and a country-made pistol along with several cartridges were seized from them, the police said.

While two criminals have been identified as Azam and Pappu, the police are yet to identify the other two killed in the gun battle though they are suspected to be members of the same gang.
