Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday expressed hope that free roaming services will start before October this year.
"Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued consultation paper in this regard. So when Trai's recommendations come and after that, we will try to start free roaming before October," Sibal told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of National Internet Registry (NIR) here.
Sibal launched the NIR, which will reduce the cost of processing IP addresses.
NIR is an entity, which coordinates the allocation of IP address with other internet resources management function at a national level in the country.
It functions under the over all umbrella of Regional Internet Registry which is Asia Pacific Network Information Centre.
After the launch of the portal, Sibal said, setting up of NIR will not only reduce cost in procuring IP address but will also facilitate faster access to information for cyber crime investigators and government authorities.
He said creation of the portal will encourage and promote activities related to research, education and training. (ANI)
