Friends: Va. Tech gunman never hinted at violence

The man authorities say killed a Virginia Tech police officer before committing suicide had broken up with his girlfriend over the summer and vaguely mentioned some family issues. But he was loyal and never hinted at plans for violence, according to friends and former classmates.

Nic Robinson is a 21-year-old history major at Radford University. She said Saturday that Ross Truett Ashley wasn't the kind of person to commit the crimes he's accused of committing. She says he was friendly and nice.

Robinson says Ashley had never talked about guns and didn't use drugs or drink heavily. She says he isn't the monster some people are portraying him as.

J.D. Muller played football with Ashley in high school. He says Ashley was a tough competitor who had a strong knowledge of Bible Scriptures.
