Chennai: A notorious history-sheeter, 'welding' Kumar, lodged in the Puzhal prison near here, was today killed after he was stabbed by another inmate, a top police official said.

DGP (Prisons) R Natraj said 'Welding' Kumar was assaulted by a fellow inmate, Karmegham,  over previous enmity but did not elaborate.

Sources say that around 2.30 pm, Kumar had an argument with three other inmates, Anbu, Raja and Karmegham. The trio had allegedly attacked Kumar with metal scrap material, causing injuries in the neck.

He was rushed to a hospital for treatment where he was declared brought dead.

Kumar, the prime accused in the 'advocate Shanmughasundaram assault case' and was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 17, 1997.

Only a couple of months ago, Kumar was shifted from Coimbatore central prison to Puzhal prison in Chennai.

Prison sources say that some well-to-do remand prisoners deposit their mobile phones with convicts for a fee. When Kumar came to Puzhal prison, he wanted to take over this operation. This resulted in a quarrel among prisoners, leading to his death.
This is the fist major violent incident in the Puzhal jail complex which became fully-functional in two-and-a-half years ago.
