New Delhi: The parents of one of the accused in the Dec 16 gang-rape case claimed in court on Wednesday that their son was innocent.
Breaking down during his testimony, the father of Vinay Sharma, along with his mother said that their son was falsely implicated in the crime and should be acquitted from the case.
They said their son knew the other accused and had gone to a music function in South Delhi but was not involved in the crime.
"My son is not accused in the gang rape. He was with us during the time the girl was allegedly gang-raped by group of six people," the mother was quoted as saying.
The prosecution has claimed Vinay was in the company of accused Ram Singh, Mukesh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and a juvenile - the accused in the case.
In their indictment, the police said that on the night of Dec 16, 2012, the accused first lured a carpenter onto the bus, robbed him and then pushed him off the moving vehicle.
They later took the victim and her boyfriend aboard the bus, assaulting them with an iron rod and taking turns to rape the girl.
The gruesome gang-rape of the girl, who died days later in a Singapore hospital from her grievous injuries, had triggered an unprecedented nationwide outrage.
People took to streets across the country as questions were raised on the safety of women in Indian cities, exerting immense pressure on the government and administration.
