Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's former wife Marianne Gingrich has claimed that he wanted an open marriage with her so that he could see another woman.
Marianne revealed in an interview with The Washington Post, that in 1999, Newt had asked her for an open marriage or a divorce at the same time when he was giving speeches around the country on family and religious values.
She said Newt called her on May 10, 1999 and told her, "I want a divorce."
Marianne recalled that she asked him whether there was some one else in his life and his silence revealed everything to her.
She said the very next day, Newt gave a speech at a conference titled 'The Demise of American Culture' to the Republican Women Leaders Forum during which he praised the merits of the founding fathers.
Marianne said she was astonished at that time.
"How could he ask me for a divorce on Monday and within 48 hours, give a speech on family values and talk about how people treat people?" she added.
She said she refused his proposal for an open marriage since she wanted to lead a proper married life.He was asking me for an open marriage, and I wouldn't do it," she added.
Meanwhile, Newt termed his former wife's interview as 'tawdry and inappropriate' and rejected answering any question regarding Marianne.
"I'm not going to say anything about Marianne," said Gingrich.
Gingrich has admitted on several occasions that he made many mistakes in his life and wished for god to forgive him. (ANI)
