GNLA attack kills Meghalaya jailer

Guwahati, Feb 3 (IBNS) Suspected militants of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) killed an assistant jailer and injured a warder of the Williamnagar District Jail in Meghalaya on Saturday night, officials said on Sunday.

The militants gunned down the assistant jailer, identified as Neil Warjri and injured warder Sarai Sing Thabah.

"At least eight hardcore cadres of GNLA equipped with sophisticated arms entered the District Jail around 8.45 pm on Saturday and opened fire, where the assistant jailer was killed and warder was injured," an official said.

The assistant jailer died on the spot while the critically injured warder was taken to Tura civil hospital.

Security forces recovered several empty cartridges of AK-47 rifle and pistol from the spot.

Security forces had launched combing operations against the militants.
