Panaji, Aug 2 (IBNS) More than a year after a driver constable in Goa committed suicide and blamed his act on his superiors in the dying declaration, a senior inspector has been suspended for allegedly provoking the constable to end his life.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced in the ongoing state legislative assembly suspension of crime branch inspector Praveen Kumar Vast.

Parrikar said the suspension was following an explanatory note from the department. He has also asked the police top brass to file a chargesheet in the case within 60 days.

Constable Chandru Gawas, attached to the crime branch had consumed half tub of 'ratol' (rat poison) paste while on duty in June 2011. In the declaration, he had said that PI Vast among other senior officers would torture him for silly reasons due to which he took a drastic step.

One among many reasons was that he was not granted leave for his wedding, which was scheduled the very next month in July 2011.

The documents were recently placed on the floor of the House in response to question by Nuvem MLA Mickky Pachecho. The legislator today alleged that a case of abetment to suicide registered at Panaji police station soon after Gawas' death is not progressing further.

Parrikar assured the House of a speedy probe and to bring to book all the culprit police officers involved in the case.
