Goa: Crime against tourists begins

Panaji, Nov 17 (IBNS) As the tourist season begins in Goa, foreigners visiting the coastal state are at the receiving end with at least three cases targeting them have been reported this week.

According to the police data, two thefts, rape and an unnatural death was reported this week.

On November 12, a Ukrainian tourist (25) was alleged raped by a Kashmiri youth at Arambol beach. Accused Tenzin Dorji took the victim to a hillock near the beach on pretext of teaching her meditation and raped her.



He supposedly also assaulted and threatened her against telling anyone. Pernem police arrested him after a complaint from the victim girl.

In two other incidents, a Russian and Britain tourists complained of theft from their hotel rooms at Morjim and Anjuna respectively.

While Russian tourist Valeria Antonevich lost belongings amounting to Rs 1.80 lakh, Brit tourist Sara Louise Whenmon alleged theft of valuables worth Rs 86, 400. The police are yet to trace the unidentified accused.

The police department has issued tourist advisory for the safety of the tourists while also advised to leave valuables including jewelries, passports and important documents in their hotel's safe deposit box.

"Never leave these items unattended in your room or carry large sums of cash on your person. Be wary of unexpected persons coming to your hotel room. Never open the door to unsolicited room service or maintenance people. Contact the front desk if you have any doubts," the advisory states.

There are incidents indicting the foreigners as recently Italian national Antonio Binda was arrested for reckless bike ride at Calangute. The hired bike collided with an oncoming truck injuring himself.

Nearly over two to three lakh tourists have already descended to Goa since last month and it is expected to escalate as the peak season approaches. The government expects arrival of 26 lakh tourists including foreigners this season.
