The UPA Government on Friday played down the strike called by the government employees in Uttar Pradesh against the quota bill and blamed the Samajwadi Party (SP) for fanning it as the party is opposing the bill.

Lashing out at the state government, Minister of state in Prime Minister's office, V Narayanasamy said: "As far as apprehensions in the mind of officers, which we were referring to, this apprehension is created by some people. Because right from 1955 the Schedule Caste (SC) and Schedule Tribe (ST) communities have been enjoying reservation in promotion in government services."

Nearly 18 lakh government employees have stalled work since Thursday and went on strike in Uttar Pradesh to protest introduction of reservation in promotion bill in the Rajya Sabha.

The government, under pressure from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which had bailed the government out during the vote in the parliament on FDI, tabled the Constitution amendment bill that guarantees reservation in promotion for the SCs and STs in government jobs.

The slogan-shouting protesters alleged that the government was forcefully trying to pass the bill but they promised not to disrupt emergency services like electricity, water, transport and health.

"The 18 lakh employees of Uttar Pradesh, both of general and backward category, are angry, because there is an effort to forcefully pass the reservation in promotion bill in the Rajya Sabha. But we will not disturb the essential services such as electricity, water, transport and health as we do have not any issue with the public," said Shailendra Dubey, leader of the employees.

Dubey urged the government to withdraw the bill, as it could impact the future of nearly three lakh employees in the country.

The law, if enacted, would be implemented since 1995, resulting in promotion of many junior employees, belonging to lower castes, by-passing the general category officials. (ANI)
