New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS) The government is committed to the promotion of the interests of overseas Indians and has signed agreements with a number of countries to ensure this, President Pranab Mukherjee said Thursday.

The government launched the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana on a pilot basis in May 2012 to provide emigrant Indian workers benefits like life insurance cover, pensions and return and resettlement savings," Mukherjee told a joint sitting of members of both houses of parliament here.

"We also signed social security agreements with Finland, Canada, Japan and Sweden. Similar agreements with Austria and Portugal will be signed soon," he said.

The president said the government was deeply committed to promoting the interests and welfare of overseas Indians.
