Prime Minister Manmohnan Singh on Sunday said that government had acted swiftly amidst the nationwide outcry following the fatal gang-rape and assault on a Delhi student last December.

Speaking at a conference of chief ministers and chief justices of high courts in Delhi, he said reforms have been made in the laws against crimes on women, but admitted that more needs to be done.

Saying that there was a "national outrage" after the tragedy of the gang-rape in Delhi on December 16, he said "we must not allow ourselves to be overcome by a sense of despair".

"Notwithstanding the steps that have already been taken, a great deal more needs to be done as far as offences against women are concerned," Singh said.

On Dec 16, six men raped and brutalised a 23-year-old medical student with an iron rod on a moving bus in New Delhi. The victim succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital on Dec 29.

The incident triggered an unprecedented public outcry and put the government and the law enforcement agencies under severe pressure to step up safety measures for women in the country.
